About Professor Giyeon Kim
Dr. Giyeon Kim is Professor in the Department of Psychology at Chung-Ang University. Dr. Kim is a gerontologist who studies aging and mental health disparities. Prior to joining CAU in Fall 2017, Dr. Kim was a tenured Associate Professor at The University of Alabama, USA. Dr. Kim’s research has been funded by many research grants including a five year NIH career development award (K01) funded by the National Institute on Aging. Dr. Kim received multiple prestigious research awards such as the Margret M. and Paul B. Baltes Award from Gerontologial Society of America (GSA), the first place honor of the Charles Barkley Health Disparities Research Investigator Award, and the Outstanding Dissertation Award from Gerontologial Society of America (GSA). Dr. Kim publishes very widely in the following three areas to understand mechanisms of mental health disparities: (a) racial/ethnic disparitiesin mental health care focusing on factors contributing to disparities between minorities and nonminorities (e.g., geographic factors, limited English proficiency, and perceived discrimination); (b) racial/ethnic disparities in mental health status focusing on risk factors of a wide range of psychological issues and psychiatric disorders; and (c) measurement equivalence issues looking at cultural influences on (standard) mental health screening tools. Dr. Kim is currently an Executive Editor of Ethnicity & Health and an editorial board member of Journal of Aging and Health, Journal of Cross-Cultural Gerontology, Asian American Journal of Psychology, and Innovation in Aging. Dr. Kim is a fellow of Gerontological Society of America.
